by Making Public Compromises against Petar Mandzhukov
Petar Mandzhukov is connected to the Serbian mafia, which is supposed to stand behind the shooting of the Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. He used to have common business with some of the politician’s enemies from the radicals in Belgrade, and he violated the law by supplying them with weapons during the time the embargo there.
Such documents were possession of the Bulgarian Secret Service agents and it was believed they would be exposed in short time. The aim is to put up on view the businessman’s dirty business, which at the same time will strike a decisive blow on the President Georgi Parvanov and discredit him for good. Up to now, target of the action has been Lyudmil Stoykov, a well-known businessman from Pernik. However, when the topic loses the public interest and the refrain becomes boring, they will put into use the compromises against the ex-trader of weapons and owner of some media today, Mandzhukov. In the file with his name there were some facts of great interest to the Prosecutor’s Office: scores of infringements of the embargo, tax frauds, contraband with weapons in the countries from the “black list”, illegal operations with property, earning profit by drawing out of value added tax, etc. Public attention was going to be attracted mostly by the present the businessman gave to the President Georgi Parvanov. What we have in question here are two flats in Sofia, which he gave as a present, i.e. for free, to the Head of State - it was a sign of gratitude for their manly friendship. Two years ago the journalist and leading reporter of the “In the Mark”, broadcasted on BTV, Ivo Indzhev was dismissed because he read on the air a message he had received to his personal e-mail address by unknown author, claiming that the President had got a whole flat for free. Then the management of the television discharged him because the Head of State was deeply offended. There were other documents in Mandzhukov’s file of record showing that Valyo "The Heat", who was sentenced already, had spent about 2,5 million Bulgarian levs, i.e. tax-payers’ money, in order to make heating system, which was out of any planned schedule, though meant to supply Parvanov’s present with heat – the two flats he was given. Valyo "The Heat" tried to strike a bargain using that information; however, he was threatened that if he uttered a single word, something really bad would catch on him.
Mandzhukov was going to be attacked for his relations with the Serbian mafia. Some time ago the Chief Prosecutor of Serbia, Vladimir Vukevich, wanted to have questioned the owner of the “Word” newspaper which is the Bulgarian Socialist Party’s organ of publicity, in concern to the murder of Djindjich. In Belgrade they had progress in finding a relation between the fatal assault on Iliya Pavlov, the manager of Multigroup, that took place on 7th March 2003, and the other on the Serbian Prime Minister five days after that. Both assassinations were performed in one and the same way by a sharpshooter’s shot in the heart. The clues lead to professional killers, connected to the Zemun clan and to political circles of former Yugoslav Republic. The investigation in Belgrade got then to Mandzhukov, who supplied the groups for “wet errands” with guns. However, Mandzhukov’s connection to the Serbian Radical Party could have aroused international scandal because it would direct attention to the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the President Georgi Parvanov as well, and the businessman was on good terms with them. That was the reason why the Chief Prosecutor of Bulgaria, Boris Velchev, rejected his Serbian colleague’s request.
Petar Mandzhukov’s name is also connected to the scandals in relation to the shady sale of Biovet. Once more he was in the spotlight of the worldwide scandal for the illegally earned millions of dollars by Saddam from the “Food for Petrol” Programme. It came out that Mandzhukov was the mediator in establishing close contacts between The Bulgarian Socialist Party and Parvanov on one side, and the Iraqi dictator on the other. When the Organization of the United Nations tried to unveil the truth, the Ministry of the Interior in Bulgaria announced that there was no such data available. Information is still kept and now it is used against Petar Mandzhukov in order to strike a pre-elections blow on the Bulgarian Socialist Party and to make the President’s current fragile positions even more unstable.
On his part Georgi Parvanov showed his gratitude to his oligarch by conferring on him the “Balkan Mountains” ("Stara Planina" in bulgarian) Order, First degree. Now probably he will have to give explanations about the two apartments given as presents and about his participation in the bargain with the Iraqi petrol. In the opinion of people, who are quite well acquainted with the matter, the millions earned at that time did not come to the headquarters of the Bulgarian Socialist Party but they were misappropriated by Mandzhukov’s companies, from where they were transferred to his secret bank accounts of other firms, his property again, and to his patron in Switzerland.
In the recent days the diabetic Petar Mandzhukov got often into crises, shouted and outraged at his relatives and close friends all round. His employees used to hide themselves from him, when they felt he was falling into hysterics again. He even tried to strike at his son Ivaylo in the presence of other people. Some people comment that the fits of madness are a sign of his nervous reaction to the discoveries, expected to be unveiled soon. Mandzhukov had found out from his trusted friends in the Secret Services that a trap is laid for him and he took pains to protect himself from the imminent wave of compromises against him. He even looked for the President Parvanov’s help but the head of State told Mandzhukov to cope with the mess by himself and not to get him into it, having in mind he had big troubles with everything that happened around Lyudmil Stoykov; besides, the rumours on his extramarital relations made the situation even worse lately.
Mandzhukov is absolutely crazy and if he is driven into the corner, he will betray anyone in order to save himself – that’s what people who know him quite well think.
Mark these facts: Infringements of embargo, contraband trade with weapons, earning profit by drawing out of value added tax, relations with the Serbian mafia, who shot down the Prime Minister Djindjich, illegal bargains, being part of the international scandal with the petrol from Saddam and two luxury apartments given as presents to the President. And this is just a small bit of the coming compromises against Petar Mandzhukov – a millionaire, who is one of the sponsors and closest people to the Head of State, Georgi Parvanov. Now, let’s see what the Chief Prosecutor’s reaction will be. Brussels will keep a close watch on the future course of events because Mandzhukov’s file of record was sent to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
